Nature & Outdoor Activities in the Algarve

The Algarve is a fabulous destination for nature lovers. Here's just a few ideas on what you could enjoy.

Bird Watching

Even without leaving the comfort of the villa visitors have reported sightings of Bee-eaters, Storks, an Azure winged Magpie, Sardinian, Subalpine and Melodious Warblers, the Woodchat Shrike, Little Owls, Red necked Nightjars and Hoopoes.

When birdwatching in the Algarve you are treated to a wide variety of birds all year round, and as the region is on the flightpath of many types of migrating birds, you can enjoy a different experience depending on the time of year. The answer to the diversity of species on offer lies in the nature of the regions geography, which includes wetlands, saltpans, marshes and lakes. Both brackish and freshwater.

Just a few recommended locations include:

• Pera marshes (20 minutes drive), near Armaçao de Pera, offers a wide range of birds depending on the season, but includes Flamingoes, Purple Swamp Hens, Purple Herons, Little Bitterns, Bee-Eaters, Red-Necked Nightjars, Spoonbills, Black-winged Silts, Black Terns, and many more.
• Sagres peninsula
• Quinta da Rocha (area of disused saltpans adjacent to the estuary), excellent for migrants and waders
• Monchique
• Quinta do Lago
• Tavira

Walking

The Algarve is a great location for walkers offering the choice of coastal paths, or walks through rustic villages or with mountain views. At Casa Alegre we have a number of books and maps detailing local walks for guests to borrow and enjoy.

Dolphin Watching

Wild dolphin watching is always a popular activity and trips are available are available from various places along the Algarve coast.

Grotto Trips 

A great chance to experience the wonders of the beautiful Algarve coastline. You can pick up a trip directly from many beaches during the summer season or from Lagos. Choose a small traditional fishing boat which will enable you to get into the smallest of caves. 

Sea Kayaking

Take an organised trip or just hire sea kayaks direct from the beach. A fun and easy way to explore the beautiful coast line - no experience needed! There are also trips from Faro which explore the parque natural da ria formosa.

Jeep Safari

A number of companies offer jeep safaris, which offer a great way to get a guided tour of the Algarve countryside and places off the beaten track. One near to us is Bulldog Buggies.
